You can fix it!
Being able to perform basic service, maintenance or small repairs on a bicycle, is a requirement for anyone who is serious about his or her cycling.
There's no doubt that a clean and properly-maintained bike will not only perform better, but it will also last longer and be a lot safer to ride than one that's been neglected. And performing basic maintenance not only helps you achieve those things, but it may also allow you to ride your bike back to your starting point after you suffer some sort of mechanical failure while on the road. As we all know, these types of failures usually happen when your're at least 25 miles into the ride.
Every bike owner/rider should at minimum know how to take off the wheels, replace or patch a punctured tube, and remount the tire and wheel back on the bike. From there the sky's the limit, of course, but it is a good idea to also know how to clean the chain and all the other transmission components, as this will allow for proper operation. While at it, you can measure the chain for wear so you'll know when to replace it.
As you become more comfortable and familiar with your bike, you may want to buy some specific tools. For example, if you want to replace the cassette, you will need a few special tools. Nothing too expensive mind you, but definitely the right tool for the job.
Having a good bicycle repair and service manual handy, will allow you to perform all sorts of basic maintenance tasks, all the way to completely rebuilding your bike's bottom bracket, or fixing the bike's suspension, if so equipped.
The bicycle repair manuals we sell are some of best and easy to use, and written for the do-it-yourself bike mechanic. Get one and get familiar with how your bike works. Even if never pick up a wrench, having a good understanding on how the bike works will allow you to discuss repairs with a mechanic, and understand what's being explained. |
