The Cruising Woman's Advisor (2nd Edition) by Diana Jessie

Many books have been written about living aboard a boat at sea, but most such books basically tell stories about the experience. They talk about the hardships and adventures, not about the practical concerns that someone making a sea journey preparation would face.

Diana Jessie has been living aboard a boat for decades, and she explains about the practical matters a sea journey preparation would involve. They range from what a would-be cruiser should study beforehand to how to provision the boat.

Jessie writes from the perspective of somebody who would be traveling with family members as opposed to a crew, so there are chapters on children and the likely challenges a married couple would face at sea. She also writes from a decidedly female point of view and thus includes advice on personal hygiene, shopping in foreign countries, and sex at sea.

Jessie describes many of the likely hazards and problems someone at sea will probably face and includes advice on what to do. There are chapters on such matters as evading storms and retrieving somebody who has fallen overboard.

Other concerns Jessie addresses include:

  • Choosing the right boat
  • Staying in touch with people back home
  • Handling injury and illness
  • How to make a boat one's home
  • Safety gear
