The world-famous Jeep CJ series was produced from 1944 to 1986. Naturally, anything that followed was going to have big shoes to fill (well, probably more like boots!). Luckily, the YJ (as it is known internally) was a great follow-up to that spectacular act. From a styling standpoint, these models are most known for their square headlights. While still capable off-roaders, AMC spent a great deal of time and resources to capture a chunk of the on-road crowd with the new Wrangler. Even their ads pointed out this focus. One print advertisement featured a bright red Wrangler stuck in the middle of an otherwise black and white photograph of a freeway traffic jam. The ad copy simply said, “New Jeep Wrangler is ready for anything. Even the environment Jeep drivers dread most. Civilization.” Whether your beloved Jeep is used exclusively off-road, as a “mall crawler”, or any combination in between, this fantastic service manual is the one to use to keep it at its best.
Did you know that, with regards to timing chain installation procedures for the 2.46 liter (150 cubic inch displacement (CID)) four-cylinder engine, to verify correct installation of the timing chain, you should turn the crankshaft to position the camshaft sprocket timing mark at approximately the one o’clock position? That’s because it positions the crankshaft sprocket timing mark where the adjacent tooth meshes with the chain at the three o’clock position. You can then count the number of chain pins between the timing marks on both sprockets. There must be 20 pins. You would know this information and much, much more, if you owned this book. That’s just one small example of the high level of detail provided throughout this 1987 – 1988 Jeep Wrangler YJ service workshop manual.
