Book Excerpt: 1968-1976 Yamaha GT1, GT80, YZ80, YZ100, DT100, MX100, DT125, MX125, YZ125, DT175, MX175 Repair Manual PRIMARY DRIVE GEAR
To remove the primary drive gear, feed a rolled-up rag between the primary drive and primary driven gears to lock them. Consider the direction the gears tend to turn as you loosen the locknut, then pull the gear from the crank shaft (Figure 61). If the gear does not come off easily, pry it off with a pair of heavy screw drivers. NOTE: Always place rags or wood blocks between case and pry tools to prevent gasket surface damage. After primary drive gear removal, an O-ring will be visible in a groove on the crankshaft. Make sure this O-ring is installed before primary drive gear installation. Failure to install it will result in fouled plugs and visible exhaust smoke because of transmission oil seeping past where the O-ring should be sealing. Replace this seal if it is flattened or nicked. Always lubricate the crankshaft seal lips so the primary drive gear will slide through without tearing the seal.

MISCELLANEOUS CARBURETOR PROBLEMS
Water in carburetor float bowls and sticking carburetor slide valves can result from careless washing of the motorcycle. To remedy this problem, remove and clean the carburetor bowl, main jet, and any other affected parts. Be sure to cover the air intake when washing the machine. Be sure that the ring nut on top of the carburetor is neither too tight nor too loose. If the carburetor mounting cinch bolt is loose, the carburetor can pivot, resulting in an improper mixture because the float level is changed. If gasoline leaks past the float bowl gasket, high speed fuel starvation may occur. Varnish deposits on the outside of the float bowl are evidence of this condition. Dirt in the fuel may lodge in the float valve and cause an overrich mixture. As a temporary measure, tap the carburetor lightly with any convenient tool to dislodge the dirt. Clean the fuel tank, petcock, fuel line, and carburetor at the first opportunity, should this occur. Check the starter plunger occasionally. The neoprene seal on the bottom may become damaged. If this should occur, fuel will leak into the chamber and eventually it will work its way into the carburetor venture. This will cause the machine to run rich.

This is the right manual for the DIY'er interested in repairing or overlhauling any component on their Yamaha. Clymer manuals include detailed step-by-step instructions with photos, diagrams and exploded views to best explain the repair or overhaul tasks.
