HOW THE A-727 TORQUEFLITE WORKS

GOVERNOR CIRCUIT
The purpose of the governor and governor circuit is to provide the transmissions hydraulic system with information about road speed. Governor pressure increases with road speed. The governor operates through centrifugal force. The governor itself is comprised of a valve encased in an aluminum housing. A rod connects the valve to a weight assembly encased on the opposite side of the governor housing. This rod passes through a hole in the output shaft. The governor housing is bolted to the parking gear/governor support which is splined to the output shaft.

When the vehicle is at rest, a spring keeps the valve in the closed position. With the engine running and the vehicle at rest mainline pressure directed to the governor valve is blocked from the valve body. As the vehicle begins to move the weight assembly begins to move out due to centrifugal force. This movement pulls on the rod in turn opening the governor valve allowing line pressure to flow into the governor circuit.

CHECKING CONVERTER DIMENSIONS
Before installing any torque converter, it is wise to check several dimensions. It is possible for the crank hub and pump drive hub to be off center in relation to one another. To inspect this, locate the impeller hub in a lathe chuck within .0005 TIR, then place a dial indicator on the crank pilot. An indicator reading of .005" TIR will ensure no problems associated with alignment.

While the converter is still in the lathe, also inspect the mounting pads with an indicator. A reading within .020" TIR is acceptable. Having these dimensions within these tolerances will greatly enhance flexplate and transmission pump life.
