Book Excerpt: 1985-2003 Yamaha V-Max Repair Manual

TRANSMISSION, MIDDLE GEAR AND INTERNAL SHIFT MECHANISM
This chapter covers the disassembly and inspection of the transmission shaft assemblies, middle drive gear assembly, middle driven gear assembly and the internal shift mechanism, which is the shift drum and forks.

The external shift mechanism is covered in Chapter Six; the final drive in Chapter Twelve.

When inspecting components, compare any measurements to the specifications in Table 1. Replace any part that is worn, damaged or out of specification.

During assembly, tighten fasteners to the specified torque. Table 1 and Table 2 appear at the end of this chapter.

SHIFT PEDAL
  1. Remove the left rider footpeg as described in Chapter Fifteen.

  2. Loosen the clamp bolt on the shift lever and pull the shift lever (Figure 1) from the shift shaft. Note that the index mark on the shift shaft aligns with the gap in the shift lever.

NOTE: The shift lever must be reinstalled in this same position.

  3. Remove the snap ring (Figure 2) and its washer from the shift pedal post.

  4. Pull the shift pedal off its post and pull the shift lever from the splines of the shift shaft.

  5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the following:

    1. Lubricate the pivot post on the shifter bracket with waterproof grease.

    2. Fit the shift lever (Figure 1) onto the shift shaft so the gap in the shift lever aligns with the index mark on the shift shaft.

    3. Torque the shift lever clamp bolt to 10 N.m (89 in.-lb.)

    4. Make sure the snap ring is completely seated in its groove.

    5. Install the rider footpeg as described in Chapter Fifteen.

FASTENERS
Constant vibration can loosen many of the fasteners on a motorcycle. Check the tightness of all nuts, bolts and other fasteners.
  1. Check the tightness of all exposed fasteners. Refer to the appropriate chapter for torque specifications.

  2. Check that all hose clamps, cable stays and safety clips are properly installed. Replace missing or damaged items.
