STARTER CLUTCH AND GEARS: REMOVAL The starter gears can be removed with the engine in the frame.

1. Drain the engine oil as described in Chapter Three.
2. Place an oil drain pan under the starter clutch cover.
3. Remove the bolts securing the starter clutch cover (A, Figure 38) to the crankcase and remove the cover and gasket. Note the location of the bolt (B, Figure 38) with a copper washer under it. Install a new copper washer at this location during assembly.
4. If loose, remove the locating dowel (Figure 39).
5. Remove the shaft (A, Figure 40) and the starter idler gear (B) from the crankcase.
CAUTION: The starter clutch mounting bolt is tightened to 150 N.m (111 ft-lb.). It also has a threadlocking compound on the threads and is very difficult to loosen.
6. If the engine is installed in the frame, shift the transmission into gear. This prevents the gear from rotating while loosening the mounting bolt. Also have an assistant apply the rear brake.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

FRONT BRAKE SWITCH TESTING

1. Disconnect the two connectors (Figure 147) from the front brake lever switch.
2. Connect an ohmmeter to the switch connector.
3. Apply the brake lever. There should be continuity.
4. If there is no continuity, replace the switch.

REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

1. Disconnect the two connectors (Figure 147) from the front brake lever switch.
2. Remove the switch mounting screw (Figure 154) and remove the switch from the front brake lever.
3. Secure the new switch to the brake lever.
