Do Your Own Motorcycle Repair: Save Money and Have Fun With a Motorcycle Repair Manual

Riding a motorcycle is fun. No doubt about it. The feel of the sun warming your face, as the wind tugs at your clothes and blows through your hair, is great. But, one thing I've noticed over the years: many bikers are also do-it-yourselfers and tinkerers. Most end up getting a motorcycle repair manual either with—or shortly after—buying their motorcycle.

One of the nice things about motorcycles is that they are almost made to order for the do-it-yourself rider. First of all, with their relatively open design, it is easy to get to most areas of the motorcycle to perform basic repairs and maintenance.

A second reason is that motorcycles lend themselves well to being individualized. You can find any number of aftermarket accessories to customize your bike. This can be anything from adding saddlebags or light bars to a total makeover a la American Chopper or Biker Build-off.

Another reason to do your own maintenance and minor repairs is that you can save time and money. If you take your bike to a dealership, you will have to give it up for several days and it comes back with a price tag.

Finally, and perhaps the best reason to do some of your own maintenance and repairs, is that it is fun. By doing so, you will know more about your bike. You may also have more confidence in it as you ride down the road. Repair manuals will give you most of the information you need to do the basic maintenance and repairs.

Basic Motorcycle Maintenance Steps
Are Outlined In Repair Manuals

Repair manuals are filled with good information about your motorcycle. Basic motorcycle maintenance steps are outlined in the repair manual. The manual will also give you troubleshooting tips and information for periodic maintenance and tune-up tips. This information comes with photos and diagrams that make the instructions much clearer. The repair manual will also give you information about the engine, clutch, transmission, electrical system, wheels and final drive. The book will also give you tips on how to improve the bike's performance.

Basic motorcycle repairs are also outlined in these repair manuals. The tools needed and step-by-step instructions on how to make the repairs discussed. Photos and illustrations point out the specific part or area of the bike being addressed. These manuals break down all of the components of your bike, including the engine and drive train. While you may choose to limit yourself to minor repairs, by using the manual you could rebuild the engine if you wanted.

Even if you choose never to turn a wrench, it is still a good idea to get a repair manual for your motorcycle. If you do have a breakdown, it will be much easier for you to understand the problem. It will make it easier for you to describe the symptoms to your mechanic. You will more easily understand the work the mechanic or service center says is being performed. You will also better understand the operation of your bike by periodically reading the repair manual.
