Book Excerpt: 1988-2000 Chevrolet, GMC Pickups, Suburban, Blazer, Jimmy, Tahoe, Yukon, Denali Repair Manual

Vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with either a four- or five-speed manual or a three- or four-speed automatic transmission. Information on the manual transmission is included in this Part of Chapter 7. Information on the automatic transmission can be found in Part B of this Chapter. You'll also find certain procedures common to both automatic and manual transmissions - such as oil seal replacement - here in Part A, information on the transfer case used on 4WD models is in Part C.

Most manual transmissions are normal-duty five-speed (RPO MG5) or four-speed (RPO MCO) types. Both of these transmissions have aluminum cases. Some models are equipped with heavy-duty four-speed (RPO M20) or five-speed (RPO MT8, MW3) transmissions, which you can identify by their cast iron cases.

Depending on the expense involved in having a transmission overhauled, it may be a better idea to consider replacing it with either a new or rebuilt one. Your local dealer or transmission shop should be able to supply information concerning cost, availability and exchange policy. Regardless of how you decide to remedy a transmission problem, you can still save a lot of money by removing and installing the unit yourself.

General apperance excellent very appealing format

Content complete coverage of a broadline of trucks and SUVs Usefullness is a bit hit and miss for me as it really doesn't cover the particulars of things on my truck (not the manual's fault) I need a manual particularly written for my truck one that deals in depth with wiring, and fuel issues of a Diesel pickup. General Coments Was a good price and gives me a place to start looking, I have it in the truck with hand tools and the like. When you aren't a mechanic and are living in secluded area with no cell service or landline, having some of your questions answered is better than none, and is likely to lead you to figure out what is broken so you can get it going and get home. Wish you would have had a shop type manual for the 2500ck Silverado 6.2 turbo diesel, would be almost the perfect tool for my truck. (Perfect tool a midget monkey with three joints between the wrist and the elbow who is GMAC Certified and trained, in short a mechanic that works for peanuts and is small enough to go along and be there when needed.)
