Book Excerpt: 1998-2000 Honda VFR800FI Interceptor Repair Manual SHIFT MECHANISM AND TRANSMISSION
This chapter covers service for the external shift mechanism, transmission and internal shift mechanism. The external shift mechanism can be serviced with the engine assembled and installed in the frame. Transmission and internal shift mechanism service requires crankcase disassembly (Chapter Four). Transmission specifications are listed in Table 1. Tables 1-5 are at the end of the chapter.
EXTERNAL SHIFT MECHANISM The external shift mechanism consists of the shift shaft, shifter cam and stopper arm assembly (Figure 1). The external shift mechanism can be serviced with the engine in the frame.
TROUBLESHOOTING If the bike is experiencing shifting problems, refer to External Shift Mechanism and Transmission Troubleshooting in Chapter Two before removing the shift mechanism in this section.

VALVE SEAT RECONDITIONING Special valve surfacing tools are required to properly recondition the valve seats in the cylinder head. If equipment is not available, have a Honda dealership perform the procedure.
VALVE LAPPING Valve lapping can restore the valve seat without machining if the amount of wear or distortion is not too great. Perform this procedure after determining that the valve seat width and outside diameter are within specifications. A valve lapping tool and compound are required.
  1. Smear a light coating of fine grade valve lapping compound on the valve face seating surface.
  2. Insert the valve into the head.
  3. Wet the suction cup of the lapping stick and stick it onto the head of the valve. Spin the tool in both directions, while pressing it against the valve seat and lap the valve to the seat. Every 5 to 10 seconds, lift and rotate the valve 180 degrees in the valve seat. Continue until the gasket surfaces on the valve and seat are smooth and equal in size.
