PISTONS AND CONNECTING RODS The engine must be removed from the frame and the crankcase disassembled in order to remove the pistons and connecting rods. The pistons and connecting rods are removed through the top of the cylinder bore. PISTON AND CONNECTING ROD: REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

1. Remove the engine as described in this chapter.
2. Remove the cylinder heads as described in this chapter.
3. Mark the piston crown with the corresponding cylinder number so the piston will be reinstalled in the correct cylinder. Refer to Figure 221 for cylinder numbers.
CAUTION! If disassembling a well run-in engine, inspect the top of the cylinder bores for a ridge where the piston ring reaches the top of its travel (Figure 222). Perform Step 4 only if there is a ridge present.
4. If there is a ridge at the top of any cylinder bore, the ridge must be removed with an automotive type ridge reamer.

FRONT FORK

The front suspension uses a spring controlled, hydraulically damped, telescopic fork with air assist. An anti-drive feature has been built into the left-hand fork leg and is covered separately in this chapter. Before suspecting major trouble, drain the front fork oil and refill with the proper type and quantity; refer to Front Fork Oil Change in Chapter Three.
