There's no doubt that 1953 was an exciting year for Dodge. What was all the fuss? Well, much of it had to do with the new Red Ram V8 engine. That name alone sounds like it adds 10 horsepower! It was Dodge's first eight-cylinder since the straight eight they sold in 1930. Talk about waiting a long time for a sequel! Fortunately, the Red Ram was worth the wait. Did you know that the crankshaft in that engine uses a steel drop forging which has been carefully heat-treated so as to insure the best durability and strength? You certainly would if you owned this guide and turned to page 15 of the engine section. You'd also know that, due to the short stroke, the connecting rod journals are permitted to overlap the main bearing journals to a greater degree. This design further increases the crankshaft's rigidity. For loads of information on the engine and all other areas of these classics, be sure to check out this comprehensive guide.
