Book Excerpt: 1963-1983 Triumph 650, 750 2-Valve Twins Repair Manual CHAPTER 2 GEARBOX
1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION A four-speed constant mesh gearbox is fitted in unit with the engine on all 650 cc unit-construction models. The 650 cc Bonneville mode, the T130V, is also available, with a five-speed gearbox. Both versions of the 750 cc model, the TR7V Tiger 750 and the T140V Bonneville 750 are fitted with five-speed gearboxes as standard. Apart from the addition of the extra gear pinions, the four and five-speed gearboxes are similar in more respects. It is not necessary to dismantle the engine in order to gain access to the gearbox, although if a complete overhaul is necessary it may prove more convenient to lift the engine unit from the frame in order to gain better access. Unlike most other British manufacturers, Triumph Engineering have remained faithful to their 'up for up' and 'down for down' method of gear selection, which can be changed to the more conventional arrangement only if a reverse camplate is fitted or the gear change pedal is reversed on its shaft so that it faces rearward.
