1. After attempting to start the engine, remove one of the spark plugs as described in Chapter Three and check for the presence of fuel on the plug tip. Note the following:
1. If no fuel is visible on the plug, remove the other spark plug. If there is no fuel on this plug, perform Step 2.
2. If there is fuel on the plug tip, go to Step 5.
3. If there is an excessive amount of fuel on the plug, check for a clogged or plugged air filter, incorrect fast idle valve operation and/or adjustment, or incorrect throttle valve operation (stuck open).
2. On carbureted models, perform the Fuel Pump Volume Test described in Chapter Eight.
1. If the fuel output is low, replace the fuel pump.

When the starter button is pressed, it engages the starter relay and completes the circuit allowing electricity to flow from the battery to the starter. The starting system includes an interlock system that interrupts current flow to the starter relay and the auto-decompression relay unless the transmission is in neutral and the clutch is disengaged, or the transmission is in gear, with the clutch disengaged and the sidestand up. CAUTION: During starting, do not operate the starter for more than 5 seconds at a time. Let the starter cool for approximately 10 seconds, and try again.
