Book Excerpt: 1975-1986 Ford, Mercury Mid-Size Models Repair Manual COOLING, HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING
WATER PUMP | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
  1. With the engine cold, drain the cooling system.
  2. On some models it will be necessary to remove the air cleaner assembly and air intake duct to gain access to the water pump.
  3. Remove the fan shroud retaining bolts.
  4. Remove the fan/clutch retaining bolts from the nose of the water pump and remove the shroud, fan/clutch and spacer (if so equipped) (photo).
  5. Loosen the accessory drive belt idler, if equipped, and remove the drive belt and water pump pulley. Note: In the Steps which follow, further references to drive belt removal should be ignored if your vehicle is equipped with a serpentine drive belt.
  6. If equipped, loosen the power steering pump attaching bolts. Loosen the power steering pump drive belt by releasing the adjustment bolt and allowing the power steering pump to move toward the engine. If the power steering pump bracket is retained at the water pump, the power steering pump should be completely removed and laid to one side to facilitate removal of the bracket.
  7. If equipped with air conditioning, do not disconnect any of the hoses or lines. The following procedures can be performed by moving, not disconnecting, the compressor. Loosen the air conditioning compressor top bracket retaining bolts. Remove the bracket on engines that have it secured to the pump. Remove the air conditioner idler arm and assembly.
  8. Remove the compressor and power steering pump drive belt.
  9. If equipped, remove the air pump pulley hub bolts and remove the bolt and pulley. Remove the air pump pivot bolt, bypass hose and air pump.

BRAKES
MASTER CYLINDER | REMOVAL, INSTALLATION AND OVERHAUL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
  1. Unscrew the brake lines from the primary and secondary outlet ports of the master cylinder (photo). Plug the ends of the lines to prevent contamination. Take suitable precautions to catch the hydraulic fluid as the unions are detached from the master cylinder body.
  2. Remove the two bolts securing the master cylinder to the firewall or servo unit.
  3. Pull the master cylinder forward and lift it upward from the car. Do not allow brake fluid to contact any paint, as it acts as a solvent.
  4. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. It will be necessary to bleed the hydraulic system as described in Section 2.
  5. If a replacement master cylinder is to be fitted, it will be necessary to lubricate the seals before fitting to the car, as they have a protective coating when originally assembled. Remove the blanking plugs from the hydraulic line union seats. Inject some clean hydraulic fluid into the master cylinder and operate the pushrod several times so that the fluid spreads over all the internal working surfaces.
  6. OVERHAUL
  7. Clean the exterior of the master cylinder and wipe dry with a lint free rag. Remove the filler cover and gasket from the top of the reservoir and pour out any remaining hydraulic fluid.
  8. Remove the secondary piston stop bolt from the bottom of the master cylinder body.
  9. Remove the bleed screw.
  10. Depress the primary piston and remove the snap-ring from the groove at the rear of the master cylinder bore as shown in the accompanying illustration.
  11. Remove the pushrod and the primary piston assembly.
