The author, Al Kirschenbaum, has been in love with cars for most of his life. Initially, Al worked in New York as a civil engineer and then later he moved into the sales, service and parts departments at a couple of large car dealerships. Later, Al focused his combined interests in motorsports, technology, writing and photography into a 30 year career in automotive journalism.

Al moved to Los Angeles to join Petersen Publishing where he worked as the feature editor of the Car Craft magazine and as the technical editor for Hot Rod. Al specialized in American musclecar material and later launched Musclecar Classics.

During his years at Petersen Publishing, Al restored and raced a variety of high-performance vehicles. Al spent nearly 10 years researching and writing his masterpiece Mustang 5.0 Technical Reference and Performance Handbook: 1979-1993.
