Book Excerpt: Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean 125cc Motorcycle Repair Manual ENGINE, CLUTCH AND TRANSMISSION - OHV ENGINES
ENGINE OVERHAUL INFORMATION
  1. Before beginning the engine overhaul, read through the related procedures to familiarize yourself with the scope and requirements of the job. Overhauling an engine is not all that difficult, but it is time consuming. Check on the availability of parts and make sure that any necessary special tools are obtained in advance.
  2. Most work can be done with a decent set of typical workshop hand tools, although a number of precision measuring tools are required for inspecting parts to determine if they are worn.
  3. To ensure maximum life and minimum trouble from a rebuilt engine, everything must be assembled with care in a spotlessly clean environment.
  4. DISASSEMBLY
  5. Before disassembling the engine, thoroughly clean and degrease its external surfaces. This will prevent contamination of the engine internals, and will also make the job a lot easier and cleaner. A high flash-point solvent, such as paraffin (kerosene) can be used, or better still, a proprietary engine degreaser such as Gunk. Use old paintbrushes and toothbrushes to work the solvent into the various recesses of the casings. Take care to exclude solvent or water from the electrical components and intake and exhaust ports.
  6. When clean and dry, position the engine on the workbench, leaving suitable clear area for working. Gather a selection of small containers, plastic bags and some labels so that parts can be grouped together in an easily identifiable manner. Also get some paper and a pen so that notes can be taken. You will also need a supply of clean rags, which should be as absorbent as possible.

BODYWORK
SIDE COVERS
  1. It is usually necessary to remove the seat before removing a side cover (see Section 2).
  2. Check to see whether the cover is secured by a screw or screws, in which case undo it/them (see illustration).
  3. Feel around the cover to get an idea of where any locating pegs are, then carefully maneuver the cover as required to free them (see illustrations).
  4. Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure the grommets are in good condition.
