This Clymer repair manual covers Honda CB550 (CB550SC) Nighthawk, and CB650 (CB650SC) Nighthawk, 1983-1985. Honda Nighthawk motorcycles are powered by air-cooled, 4-stroke, inline 4-cylinder engines, with double overhead camshafts (DOHC). Engine lubrication is by wet sump with a frame-mounted oil cooler. Transmission is a 6-speed with wet, multi-plate clutch. Power is transferred to the rear wheel by a drive shaft and the final drive unit.
Book Excerpt: 1983-1985 Honda CB550, CB650 Nighthawk Repair Manual CHOKE CABLE REPLACEMENT
  1. Remove both side covers.
  2. Remove the seat as described in Chapter Eleven.
  3. Remove the fuel tank as described in this chapter.
  4. Loosen the choke cable clamp screw (Figure 40).
  5. Partially remove the carburetor assembly as described in this chapter.
  6. NOTE: It may not look like it, but it is practically impossible to remove the choke cable from the carburetors with the carburetor assembly in place. There is just not enough room for 2 hands within the area.
  7. Remove the cable end from the choke linkage.
  8. Remove the clutch switch wires at the clutch lever.
  9. Remove the screws securing the left-hand switch assembly (A, Figure 47) and remove the switch assembly from the handlebar.

ENGINE
OIL COOLER: REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
(Refer to Figure 132 for this procedure) This procedure is shown with the exhaust system removed for clarity. It is not necessary to remove it for this procedure.
  1. Place the bike on the centerstand.
  2. Drain the engine oil as described in Chapter Three.
  3. Place a drain pan under the oil filter housing; residual oil will drain out when the oil filter housing and oil cooler are removed.
  4. Remove the oil filter bolt (Figure 133).
  5. If the oil cooler is just going to be removed and not disassembled, perform the following:
    1. Remove the oil filter cover, spring, washer and filter.
    2. Remove the bolt (Figure 134) securing the oil cooler assembly to the frame.
