Book Excerpt: 1996-2013 Yamaha Royal Star Repair Manual
(Note: this excerpt is from the 1996-2003 Clymer M374 manual, now superseded by this new updated edition). ENGINE TOP END
This chapter provides complete service and overhaul procedures for the engine top end components. This includes the cylinder head covers, camshafts, valves, cylinder heads and cam chain tensioner. Refer to Chapter Three for valve adjustment procedures. All the Royal Star models feature a liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, dual overhead camshaft (DOHC), V-four engine. The crankshaft is supported by four pairs of plain bearings in a horizontally-split crankcase. The engine in the XVZ13TF model also includes an engine balancer. The camshafts in each cylinder bank are chain-driven by the crankshaft. Chain tension is controlled by an automatic, spring-loaded tensioner that bears against the rear run of the cam chain. The engine and transmission share a common case and the same wet-sump oil supply. The hydraulic, wet-plate clutch sits on the right side of the engine. Refer to Chapter Six for clutch service procedures; refer to Chapter Seven for transmission procedures.

1999 Yamaha Royal Star

Above: Ken Compagna's 1999 Yamaha Royal Star Boulevard. He purchased it in 2008 with only 1300 miles. Bike was like new. Most people ask Ken what kind of bike it is, since the only Yamaha logo is on lower side of the crank case. He rode his Royal Star in the Run for the Red, Hunt County Texas, along with over 200 other riders to support and raise awareness for the Volunteer Fire Department. Ken says, "ALWAYS wear the helmet, gloves, leather, boots." Good advice!
