This chapter covers in detail the checks and procedures necessary for the tune-up and routine maintenance of your vehicle. Section 1 includes the routine maintenance schedule, which is designed to keep the machine in proper running condition and prevent possible problems. The remaining Sections contain detailed procedures for carrying out the items listed on the maintenance schedule, as well as additional maintenance information designed to increase reliability. Maintenance information is also printed on decals, which are mounted in various locations on the vehicle (see illustration). Where information on the decals differs from that presented in this Chapter, use the decal information. Since routine maintenance plays such an important role in the safe and efficient operation of your vehicle, it is presented here as a comprehensive check list. These lists outline the procedures and checks that should be done on a routine basis.

THE ENGINE | GENERAL INFORMATION

The engine on Banshee models is a liquid-cooled, twin-cylinder two-stroke. The engine/transmission assembly is constructed from aluminum alloy. The crankcase is divided horizontally. The cylinder, piston, crankshaft bearings and connecting rod lower end bearing are lubricateed by the fuel, which is a mixture of gasoline and two-stroke oil. The two-stroke oil is mixed into the fuel each time fuel is added to the tank. The transmission and clutch are lubricated by four-stroke engine oil, which is contained in a sump within the crankcase. Power from the crankcase is routed to the transmission via a wet, multi-plate type clutch. The transmission has six forward gears.
