With this book, you will learn how to transfer the maximum amount of your engine's power to the rear wheels. This is the key for successful drag racing, as you want your car to accelerate as quickly as possible from a standing start. In How to Hook and Launch, author and championship-winning racer Dick Miller explains, in easy-to-understand language, how you can maximize drag strip launch potential. The various types of suspension used on all makes of front-engine, rear-wheel-drive domestic vehicles, are all explored. If you want to optimize your car's capability at the drag strip, this is the book you want!
Book Excerpt: How-To Hook and Launch: Traction Mods for Street and Strip INTRODUCTION
This book is designed to explain the principles of why Ford, GM, Chrysler and AMC classic muscle cars act the way they do under hard acceleration, and how to make it better. Armed with this knowledge, you can maximize your car's traction. This gives you an advantage your competitor may not have. The book then explores the different rear suspensions (leaf springs, three links and four-link), then front suspensions (solid axle, double A-arm, single A-arm and torsion bar). I then discuss tires and tuning suspensions for maximum traction, and finally how to make your car more consistent and therefore more likely a winner. Originally, rear-wheel-drive cars were designed with comfort, stability and performance in mind. Today's incredible horsepower levels greatly exceed what factory suspensions were designed to handle. When making any of the changes described in this book, you must also follow any and all necessary safety recommendations for the work you are accomplishing. Safety comes first, and you can never be safe enough.

Author Dick Miller has been drag racing for more than 40 years, and the majority of his experience comes from modified street cars, instead of from purpose-built race cars. Dick manufactures custom-crafted suspensions and traction aids for a wide range of domestic rear-wheel-drive vehicles.
