Book Excerpt: 1993-2009 Aprilia SR50, Rally, Sonic, Habana, Mojito Scooter Repair Manual TRANSMISSION
GENERAL INFORMATION The transmission on all models covered by this manual is fully automatic in operation. Power is transmitted from the engine to the rear wheel by belt, via a variable size drive pulley (the variator), an automatic clutch on the driven pulley, and a reduction gearbox. Both the variator and the automatic clutch work on the principal of centrifugal force. The transmission can be worked on with the engine in the frame. Note: On some models the internal components of the transmission may differ slightly to those components described or shown. When dismantling always note the fitted position, order and way round of each component as it is removed.

DRIVE BELT COVER
REMOVAL
  1. If the engine is still in the frame, remove any bodywork as required to access the drive belt cover on the left-hand side of the engine (see Chapter 9).
  2. If required, displace or remove the air filter housing (see Chapter 5).
  3. Where fitted, release the clip securing the air duct to the drive belt trim cover and disconnect the duct (see illustration). Undo the screws securing the trim cover and lift it off.
  4. Undo the bolts securing the drive belt cover, noting the position of the rear brake cable or brake hose clips on the bolts (see illustration). Note: It is not necessary to remove the kickstart lever before removing the cover. HAYNES HINT: Make a cardboard template of the cover and punch a hole for each bolt location. This will ensure all bolts are installed correctly on reassembly - this is important as some bolts may be of different lengths.
  5. Lift off the cover - if it will not lift away easily, tap it gently around the edge with a soft-faced hammer (see illustration). Where fitted, lift off the cover gasket - if the gasket is damaged, discard it and fit a new one on reassembly. Note the location of any dowels and remove them for safekeeping if they are loose.
