Book Excerpt: 1980-1984 Yamaha XJ650, XJ750 Repair Manual

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The frame used on the Yamaha XJ650 and 750 models is of the full cradle type, in which the engine/gearbox unit is supported in duplex tubes running below the crankcase.

The frame tubes run from the steering head lug above and below the engine unit, meeting at the swinging arm pivot point.

An outrigger section provides support and location for the seat, rear suspension units and ancillary components.

The frame is extensively braced and gusseted to minimize flexing.

The front forks are of the oil-damped telescopic type, there being several different types as discussed later in this Chapter.

Some models incorporate a hydraulically actuated anti-dive system which helps to stabilize the machine during heavy braking. The fork legs are retained by a pair of fork yokes which pivot on cup and cone steering head races.

Rear suspension is provided by a pivoted fork, or swinging arm, which is supported on tapered roller bearings located by adjustable stubs, and controlled by oil-damped coil spring suspension units.

The left-hand longitudinal section of the swinging arm takes the form of a torque tube which contains the final drive shaft and to which the final drive housing is retained.

FRONT FORKS: TYPES AND APPLICATIONS
There are five different front fork arrangements used on the various XJ models, ranging from simple oil-damped telescopic to sophisticated versions using various combinations of air pressure, damping adjustment and adjustable anti-dive control.

To avoid further confusion the types of features are described below, together with the models to which each type is fitted.
