Book Excerpt: 1987-1993 VW Fox GL, GL Sport, Wagon Service Manual ENGINE
TO INSTALL AND ADJUST CAMSHAFT DRIVE BELT:
  1. Use a socket wrench to rotate the camshaft sprocket by hand until the timing mark is aligned as shown in Fig. 4-2.
  2. Loosely install the camshaft drive belt over the crankshaft and intermediate shaft sprockets. Then temporarily install the crankshaft pulley onto the crankshaft.
  3. Use a socket wrench to rotate the crankshaft and the intermediate shaft by hand until the timing marks line up. The timing marks for the crankshaft and the intermediate shaft are shown in Fig. 4-2, above.
  4. Remove the distributor cap and check that the ignition rotor is aligned with the mark on the edge of the distributor housing. Check that the flywheel timing mark is aligned with the pointer in the timing check hole. The distributor and flywheel timing marks are shown in Fig. 4-3. When the timing marks are correctly aligned, reinstall the distributor cap.
  5. Install the camshaft drive belt. Start on the crankshaft and intermediate shaft sprockets. Install the belt so that it is as tight as possible between the crankshaft and the intermediate shaft sprockets, and between the intermediate shaft and the camshaft sprockets.
  6. Tighten the belt. Turn the tensioner clockwise and lock it in position with the locknut. Check the tension by twisting the belt, as shown in Fig. 4-4. The belt is tightened properly when it can be twisted by hand no more than 90 degrees.
  7. Torque the tensioner locknut to 45 Nm (33 ft.lb.). Turn the crankshaft two full revolutions and recheck the tension and the timing marks.

IGNITION
REMOVING AND INSTALLING DISTRIBUTOR Any time the distributor is removed, the timing will have to be checked and adjusted as described in 4. Ignition Timing. Always use new shims, snap rings, gaskets and O-rings whenever working on and reassembling the distributor. TO REMOVE:
  1. Rotate the engine by hand until the distributor rotor tip is aligned with the #1 cylinder Top Dead Center (TDC) mark on the distributor housing, as shown in Fig. 5-3.
  2. Disconnect all electrical connections from the distributor. On CIS and CIS-E cars, disconnect the vacuum line from the vacuum diaphragm.
  3. Loosen and remove the distributor hold-down. Remove the distributor by pulling it straight out. Retrieve the sealing gasket or O-ring and cover the opening in the cylinder block.
  4. NOTE: The distributor will want to rotate counterclockwise as the beveled drive gears disengage. Notice how far the distributor turns as you remove it, and reinstall it the same way.

TO INSTALL:
  1. If the crankshaft has turned since the distributor was removed, rotate the crankshaft so that the cylinder #1 is at TDC. If necessary, see ENGINE.
  2. Align the oil pump drive shaft so that it is parallel to the crankshaft as shown in Fig. 5-4. Use a screwdriver to turn it if necessary.
