CLUTCH CABLE
  1. Check that the clutch lever operates smoothly and easily.
  2. If the clutch lever operation is heavy or stiff, remove the cable (see Chapter 2) and lubricate it (see Section 15). If the cable is still stiff, replace it with a new one. Install the lubricated or new cable (see Chapter 2).
  3. With the cable operating smoothly, check that it is correctly adjusted. Periodic adjustment is necessary to compensate for wear in the clutch plates and stretch of the cable. Pull lightly on the clutch lever until free play is taken up, then measure the gap between the inner front edge of the lever and the lever bracket (see illustration). Check that the gap is as specified at the beginning of the Chapter.
  4. If adjustment is required, first loosen the lock ring on the adjuster so the 5 to 6 mm of thread is exposed (see illustration).
  5. Locate the in-line adjuster on the clutch cable behind the cylinder head (see illustration). On EX650 models first remove the right-hand fairing side panel (see Chapter 7). Loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster until the specified amount of free play is obtained at the lever, and then tighten the locknut. On EX650 models, install the right-hand fairing side panel (see Chapter 7).
  6. When required, further adjustment can be made with the adjuster at the handlebar end. Don't forget to tighten the adjuster lock ring.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
HEADLIGHT AIM NOTE: An improperly adjusted headlight may cause problems for oncoming traffic or provide poor, unsafe illumination of the road ahead. Before adjusting the headlight aim, be sure to consult with local traffic laws and regulations - for U.K. models refer to MOT Test Checks in the Reference section.
  1. Before making any adjustment, check the tire pressures are correct and the suspension is adjusted as required. Make any adjustments to the headlight aim with the machine on level ground, with the fuel tank half full and with an assistant sitting on the seat. If the bike is usually ridden with a passenger on the back, have a second assistant to do this.
  2. The headlight beam can be adjusted both horizontally and vertically. On ER650 models and 2006 to 2008 EX650 models, adjustment is made either using a spanner on the adjuster hex, or using a suitable cross-head screwdriver under the notched rim of the adjuster - a slot is provided in the back of the headlight to locate the tip of the screwdriver. On 2009-on EX650 models, adjustment is made by turning the adjuster knobs by hand. On all models, the adjusters are located on the back of the headlight assembly.
