TROUBLESHOOTING
ENGINE
Battery will not hold a charge.
Alternator drivebelt defective or not adjusted properly (Chapter 1).
Battery cables loose or corroded (Chapter 1).
Alternator not charging properly (Chapter 5).
Loose, broken or faulty wires in the charging circuit (Chapter 5).
Short circuit causing a continuous drain on the battery.
Battery defective internally.
Hesitation or stumble during acceleration.
Ignition system not operating properly (Chapter 5).
Dirty or clogged fuel injector(s) (Chapter 4).
Low fuel pressure. Check for proper operation of the fuel pump and for restrictions in the fuel filter and lines (Chapter 4).
Fuel injection or engine control systems malfunction (Chapters 4 and 6).
Engine diesels (continues to run) after being turned off.
Idle speed too high (Chapter 4).
Incorrect spark plug heat range (Chapter 1).
Vacuum leak at the intake manifold or vacuum hoses (see Section 8).
Carbon build-up in combustion chambers. Remove the cylinder head(s) and clean the combustion chambers (Chapter 2).
Valves sticking (Chapter 2).
EGR system not operating properly.
Fuel injection or engine control systems malfunction (Chapters 4 and 6).
Check for causes of overheating (Section 27).
BODY
HOOD LATCH AND CABLE | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION (Refer to illustrations 10.7, 10.8 and 10.13)
2002 MODELS
Refer to Section 11 and remove the grille.
Remove the bolts from the center vertical latch bracket.
Scribe or mark a line around the latch, then remove the two nuts from the latch.
Disconnect the cable and remove the latch.
Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
2003 AND LATER MODELS
Remove the three fasteners at the upper part of the grille support.
Scribe or mark a line around the latch, then remove the two nuts from the latch (see illustration).
Disconnect the cable and remove the latch.
Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
TO REMOVE CABLE
Refer to Chapter 5 and remove the battery.
Refer to Step 1 and remove the latch.
Refer to Chapter 6 and remove the Powertrain Control Module.
Remove the left side scuff plate and kick panel. Unbolt the hood release handle, then detach the cable from it (see illustration).
Working in the engine compartment, detach the cable from its retaining clips, then push the cable grommet through the firewall. From inside the vehicle, pull the cable through the firewall.
