If you are looking for a comprehensive guide that will show you how to service, maintain, repair or even restore your 1946-1971 Jeep CJ, this is the one!

Bentley manuals have always been popular sellers at The Motor Bookstore, and the 1946-1971 Jeep CJ Rebuilder's Manual is no exception.

If an engine, transmission or transfer case rebuild, axle repair, steering service, and electrical or body restoration appear difficult or well beyond your mechanical skills, stop worrying. Jeep expert Moses Ludel will show you how to get the job done right.

Moses talked to hundreds of Jeep enthusiasts at his "Camp Jeep" workshops and discovered that do-it-yourselfers (as well as pro mechanics), wanted an easy-to-understand, heavily illustrated, step-by-step how-to manual. And Ludel delivered! The 1946-1971 Jeep CJ Rebuilder's Manual is jam-packed with more than 1300 close-up photos that accompany the manual's text instructions.

In order to accomplish this task, Ludel took apart a vintage Jeep CJ, all the way down to the bare frame. He then proceeded to disassemble and rebuild each and every component of the vehicle while taking photos of each step. And all procedures are thoroughly detailed, and even the most difficult mechanical tasks can be easily understood.

The book covers all 1946-1971 models, including:
  • Jeep CJ-2A
  • Jeep CJ-3A
  • Jeep CJ-3B
  • Jeep CJ-5
  • Jeep CJ-6
  • Jeep MB
  • Jeep M38
  • Jeep M38A1
If an accurate restoration, to original factory standards is what you're after, the 1946-1971 Jeep CJ Rebuilder's Manual is the book you need.

REBUILDING THE FRONT AXLE ASSEMBLY
Rebuilding a closed-knuckle Spicer front axle consists of two phases: the center section/differential overhaul and the outer steering knuckle/axle shaft work. We'll begin with the center section work, which is similar to Spicer's rear differential and carrier work.

Fig. 5-25 Thoroughly clean, freshly painted, axle housing sets conveniently in a 'Bench Mule' fixture from Mark Williams Enterprises. (See Appendix.) Carrier and ring gear removed from the housing, remove the pinion flange nut, flange washer and flange. The pinion shaft comes out readily with an air impact hammer and blunt-pointed chisel applied at the recessed end of the pinion shaft.

Fig. 5-26 Slide-hammer puller, using three jaws facing outward, serves well for removing the inner pinion bearing cup.

Fig. 5-33 Pinion gearhead markings help determine shimming thickness and how to position the pinion gear. If you reuse the old pinion and the axle is original, simply re-install the original shim stack to establish pinion depth. (For further details, see "Ring-and-Pinion Gear Work Made Easier" sidebar.

Fig. 5-34 Homemade bearing installation tool is a simple piece of black pipe with a piece of flat plate welded to the end. For a Spicer 25 axle, pinion shaft diameter calls for a 1-1/2-inch inside diameter on the tube. Note that tube must clear the shaft but not touch the bearing cage or rollers.

Fig. 5-35 Again, bottle jack press works fine. Note that tool presses against the inner bearing race shoulder and clears the bearing cage. You could use this tool with a hefty hammer, setting the pinion gearhead on a block of wood to avoid damaging the gear.

Fig. 5-36 If you change the pinion gear, you will likely need to add or subtract shim stack thickness. Shims come in "kits," offering various thicknesses. (For details, see sidebar on pinion depth.)
