Book Excerpt: 1973-1977 Honda CB400, CB550 Fours Repair Manual FUEL SYSTEM AND LUBRICATION
OIL PUMP: REMOVING, DISMANTLING AND REASSEMBLY
  1. The oil pump may be removed with the engine in frame. However, do not dismantle the pump unnecessarily, only if wear or pump failure are suspected. Reassembly must be done in clean conditions.
  2. Drain the engine oil when the engine is hot.
  3. CB400F model: remove the gear lever circlip and washer. Remove the gear lever pinch bolt, and pull off the gearchange assembly. Replace the pinch bolt. CB550 models: Remove the starter motor cover after unscrewing the two hexagonal bolts. Remove the gear pedal pinch bolt, and pull off the gearchange assembly. Replace the pinch bolt.
  4. Unscrew the four crosshead screws (an impact driver may be needed), and take off the transmission cover on the left-hand side.
  5. Disconnect the oil pressure switch wire.
  6. CB400F models: Unscrew the three small hexagonal head bolts and one larger bolt and pull the pump out of its housing (note the cable clip on the front top bolt). CB550 models: Unscrew the three crosshead screws which secure the pump, and pull it out of the housing.

WHEELS, BRAKES AND TIRES
FRONT BRAKE: BLEEDING
  1. If brake action becomes spongy, it is likely that air has entered the hydraulic system, and must be bled out.
  2. Remove the cap on the bleed valve nipple and replace it with a flexible tube. The other end of the tube should be submerged in a small quantity of clean hydraulic brake fluid in a jar.
  3. Ensure that the reservoir is full to the level line. Replace the cap, to keep dirt out.
  4. Pump the brake lever until full pressure is felt, and hold the lever against this pressure. Unscrew the bleed nipple about half a turn, and pull back on the lever until it touches the handlebar. Tighten the nipple.
  5. Check the level of fluid in the reservoir, and repeat the operation until no more air bubbles emerge from the submerged end of the tube. Close the bleed valve nipple, remove the tube and replace the cap.
  6. Warning. If fluid level in the reservoir is allowed to drop too low, air will re-enter the system and the whole routine will have to be repeated. The help of an assistant is recommended during this operation.
  7. The fluid in the jar should not be reused as it will have absorbed air. It must stand for at least 24 hours before all the air bubbles will disperse.
