Book Excerpt: Flathead Tuning Manual IGNITIONS
The distributor as Ford originally designed it was nothing fancy, but it worked. With a six volt system you can't expect miracles and with only 4.5 volts going through the points they did last a long time between adjustments, which is just as well given the location. In their favor any or all adjustments can be made on the work bench and then refitted to the engine. When these engines were current issue, every garage would have had one of the numerous devices manufactured to set the timing. But over 70 years later they can be a sought after item. Of the front mounted distributors the crab is the better choice, more compact, easier to work on and less prone to breakdown due to the better rotor and cap design. If wishing to fit a crab distributor to an engine that was originally fitted with a divers helmet type distributor there are two ways this can be done. An adapter can be bolted to the timing cover, to which the distributor is bolted or the timing cover can be exchanged for the later two bolt type and a spacer is fitted between the distributor and the timing cover. It might be appropriate to mention here the advance characteristics of the distributors which have a non-adjustable mechanical advance mechanism and have 0 degrees at cranking speed and advances to 6-8 degrees at 800 rpm with total advance of 24 degrees at 1200 rpm. I tested one and it advanced a total of 24 degrees by 1800 rpm. I would put the difference down to 50 years of wear and the fact that the original specifications were a little rubbery. The contacts were set at between .014-.016.
