Book Excerpt: 1969-1976 Ducati MK III, Desmo Singles Repair Manual ENGINE CLUTCH AND TRANSMISSION
ENGINE/TRANSMISSION UNIT | REMOVAL FROM FRAME
  1. Place the machine securely on its center stand so that it is supported firmly on level ground and is in no danger of falling over during the removal operation. If available, a raised platform will make work on the engine easier, but this is in no way essential.
  2. Obtain a container of about 1 gallon (5 litres) capacity and place it beneath the crankcase. Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the left-hand casing. Note that this plug incorporates the crankcase filter. Allow the oil to drain while working on other parts of the engine, finally refitting the plug when empty.
  3. Turn both fuel taps to the off position, and pry off the plastic feed pipes using a small screwdriver. Release the dualseat by unscrewing the nuts or knurled knobs which retain it at the rear, and then pulling it back to disengage it from the two prongs which retain it at the front. Remove the two retaining nuts at the front of the gas tank, then release the rubber retaining strap at the rear. The tank should now be lifted away and placed in a safe position to await reassembly. On no account leave the tank anywhere where sparks or naked flames are likely, in view of the fire risk. Isolate the battery by disconnecting the negative (-) lead.
  4. Remove the rubber hose between the carburetor and air cleaner (where fitted). Release the carburetor flange mounting bolts, and lift the carburetor away from the inlet stub. There is normally no need to remove the carburetor completely; it can be left attached to the choke and throttle cables and lodged across the top of the frame, clear of the engine.

IGNITION SYSTEM
CONTACT BREAKER ASSEMBLY | REMOVAL, EXAMINATION AND RENOVATION | COIL MODELS
  1. If the points appear badly pitted or worn, they should be removed for further examination. Start by disconnecting the contact breaker lead from the moving contact spring blade, making careful note of the disposition of the washers to aid reassembly. Slacken and remove the fixed contact retaining screw to allow the assembly to be lifted clear of the baseplate. The moving contact can be lifted off the fixed contact pivot pin to permit close examination of the contact faces.
  2. If the contact faces appear badly burnt or pitted, it will be necessary to renew the set. Note that burnt contact faces are quite often due to a faulty condenser allowing arcing to occur as the points separate. See Section 6 for further details. If only lightly marked, it is possible to dress the contact faces using a fine emery cloth or an oilstone. The contact faces must be kept square, the object being to remove any material which may have caused localized contact. Where a pip on one contact, and a corresponding pit on the other contact has developed, it is more important to remove the projecting material than to remove the pitting. Finish off with fine polishing paper to produce a bright surface finish. It is considered best to finish the contacts to a slightly convex profile.
  3. Before reassembling and resetting the contact breaker assembly, check that the automatic timing unit (ATU) is functioning correctly. Apply a smear of grease or engine oil to the cam face.
