Book Excerpt: 1968-1972 Mercedes-Benz 230, 250, 280 Repair Manual INTRODUCTION TO THE MERCEDES-BENZ
The range of cars covered by this manual differs widely in body style but mechanically the cars are very similar. All power units are of the six cylinder in-line single overhead camshaft type with either carburetors or a fuel injection system. The Mercedes-Benz is undoubtedly rugged and carefully constructed with attention to detail and safety aspects. Due to its very size, the car may seem complicated but it is quite conventional and should not present the home mechanic with any problems, provided he possesses adequate lifting and jacking equipment and realizes that most major operations will take longer than would be the case with a smaller and less sophisticated vehicle.

TRANSMISSION
TRANSMISSION | DISMANTLING INTO MAJOR ASSEMBLIES
  1. The following operations apply to all types of manual (G76) transmission although the design of individual components may vary slightly between one version and another.
  2. If the transmission is to be changed for a new or reconditioned unit, then the clutch bellhousing must be removed from the old unit for refitting to the new one.
  3. The type G72 transmission is different in that it has a top mounted selector mechanism instead of being side mounted as is the case with G76 transmissions (Figs. 6.18 and 6.19).
  4. Clean any dirt and grease from the outside of the transmission casing once it has been removed from the car.
  5. Remove the clutch release mechanism from within the clutch housing and then unbolt and remove the clutch bellhousing from the transmission casing.
  6. From the side of the transmission, release the pinch bolt and remove the reverse shift lever (112a) (Fig. 6.17).
  7. Pry out the snap-ring (121) and extract the washer (120) (Fig. 6.20).
  8. Unscrew and remove all the cover bolts. Any that are masked by the remaining shift levers can be made accessible if the shift levers are moved aside.
  9. Tap the cover carefully outwards off its positioning dowels while simultaneously tapping the end of the reverse speed shaft (112) inwards with a plastic faced hammer.
  10. As soon as the fingers can be inserted behind the cover, disconnect the shift forks from the rockers and then tilt the cover's upper edge and withdraw it outwards and upwards. Remove the paper gasket (Fig. 6.21).
  11. Unbolt and remove the cover from the front of the transmission casing (Fig. 6.22).
  12. Retain the compensation washers (Fig. 6.23).
