CONVERTIBLE TOP POWER SYSTEM

The operating principles and replacement of the major assemblies and electrical units are described here:
  1. Operating Principles

  2. The Convertible top lift mechanism consists of a motor, a relay, a limit switch, and flexible drive cables that operate two lifting jacks. The reversible type motor has double driving ends to which are attached the drive cables. Each drive cable operates a lifting jack located at each side of the quarter panel (fig. 1). The motor and relay are located under the rear seat. The motor is operated by a switch located on the instrument panel.

The lifting jacks have worm nuts which act as stops, at the top and the bottom, to limit the length of travel. A limit switch, located on the windshield header, prevents motor operation when the top is locked to the windshield header. The limit switch also breaks the circuit when contacted with the top.

  3. Electrical Units

  4. Fig. 2 shows that electrical units and wiring used on the Convertible top. This diagram shows the routing of all wires and the wire color. It is important when replacing any electrical units to connect the wires to their proper terminals. If any one piece of wire requires replacement, always use the correct size wire. If a new wire is used, it should be marked to indicate what wire it has replaced to assure proper installation in the future.

TOP CONTROL SWITCH REPLACEMENT

To prevent accidental top operation, disconnect the battery cable. Remove the knob and bezel (fig. 2). Remove the control switch from the mounting bracket. Disconnect the wires at the switch (fig. 2) and remove the switch.

To install, connect the wires to the switch. See figure 2 for correct wire color. Position the switch on the mounting bracket. Install the bezel and the control knob. Connect the battery and check top operation.

POWER PLANT
OIL FILTER

An oil filter diaphragm is now used, in the full-flow type filter, to prevent all the oil from draining down into the crankcase when the engine is not operating. This reserve of oil reduces the time required to fill the filter housing and obtain oil pressure at the bearings.

The diaphragm, shown installed in fig. 2, must be positioned so the slot is horizontal and toward the top of the cylinder block recess. If the diaphragm is installed in any other position, it will lose its effectiveness in retaining oil in the housing.

Normally the diaphragm will not require service. However, if the diaphragm is bent or damaged, it should be replaced, positioning it as shown in fig. 2.

When installing the filter cover, be sure to tighten the center bolt to the correct torque (20-25 foot-pounds). If an offset wrench fitting is not available, the correct center bolt torque can be obtained by turning bolt 3/4 to 1 turn after it makes light contact with the filter housing when installed on the cylinder block.
