DRIVE CHAIN AND SPROCKETS: CHAIN SLACK CHECK
A neglected drive chain won't last long and can quickly damage the sprockets. Routine chain adjustment and lubrication isn't difficult and will ensure maximum chain and sprocket life.
To check the chain, have an assistant support the bike upright, but do not have someone sit on it to do this - it is important that the bike's wheels are resting on the ground with no weight on the seat. Shift the transmission into neutral.
Push up on the bottom run of the chain and measure the total up-and-down slack at a point midway between the two sprockets (see illustrations), then compare your measurement to that listed in this Chapter's Specifications.
As the chain stretches with wear, adjustment will periodically be necessary (see below).
Since the chain will rarely wear evenly, rotate the rear wheel or roll the bike forward so that another section of chain can be checked (having an assistant to do this makes the task a lot easier; do this several times to check the entire length of chain, and then mark the tightest spot.
CAUTION: Riding the bike with excess slack in the chain could lead to damage.
In some cases where lubrication has been neglected, corrosion and dirt may cause the links to bind and kink, which effectively shortens the chain's length and makes it tight (see illustration).
Thoroughly clean and work free any such links, then highlight them with a marker pen or paint. Take the bike for a ride.
ENGINE, CLUTCH AND TRANSMISSION
NOTE: This procedure can be carried out with the engine in the frame. If the engine has been removed, ignore the steps which do not apply.
Remove the lower fairing and the fairing side panels (see Chapter 7). Drain the engine oil (see Chapter 1). Remove the clutch (see Section 13).
Make sure the transmission is in neutral. Note how far the gearchange linkage rod is threaded into the lever and arm, as this determines the height of the lever relative to the footrest.
Loosen the rod locknuts, then unscrew the rod and separate it from the lever and the arm (the rod is reverse-threaded on the lever end, so will unscrew from both lever and arm simultaneously when turned in the one direction) (see illustrations).
Withdraw the rod from the frame (see illustration).
Make an alignment mark where the slot in the gearchange linkage arm aligns with the shaft. Unscrew the pinch bolt on the linkage arm and slide the arm off the shaft (see illustration).
Release the E-clip and remove the washer from the shaft (see illustration).
