The thermostat is located at the front of the engine, bolted to the bottom of the water pump (see illustration 7.15a and 7.15b). The thermostat allows for quicker warm-ups and governs the normal operating temperature of the engine. CHECK: If the thermostat is functioning properly, the temperature gauge should rise to the normal operating temperature quickly and then-stay there, only rising above the normal position occasionally when the engine gets unusually warm. If the engine does not rise to the normal operating temperature quickly, or if it overheats. The thermostat should be removed and checked or replaced. Before condemning the thermostat, check the coolant level, cooling fans and temperature gauge (or light) operation. - If the engine takes a long time to warm up, the thermostat is probably stuck open. Replace the thermostat. - If the engine runs hot, check the temperature of the upper radiator hose. If the hose isn?t hot, the thermostat is probably stuck shut. Replace the thermostat. - If the upper radiator hose is hot, it means the coolant is circulating and the thermostat is open. Refer to the Troubleshooting section at the front of this manual for the cause of overheating. - If an engine has been overheated, you may find damage such as leaking head gaskets, scuffed pistons and warped or cracked cylinder heads.

BODY REPAIR: MINOR DAMAGE REPAIR OF SCRATCHES

If the scratch is superficial and does not penetrate to the metal of the body, repair is very simple. Lightly rub the scratched area with a fine rubbing compound to remove loose paint and built-up wax. Rinse the area with clean water. Apply touch-up paint to the scratch, using a small brush. Continue to apply thick layers of the paint until the surface of the paint in the scratch is level with the surrounding paint. Allow the new paint at least two weeks to harden, then blend it into the surrounding paint by rubbing with a very fine rubbing compound. Finally apply a coat of wax to the scratch area. If the scratch has penetrated the paint and exposed the metal of the body, causing the metal to rust, a different repair technique is required. Remove all loose rust from the bottom of the scratch with a pocket knife, then apply rust inhibiting paint to prevent the formation of rust in the future. Using a rubber or nylon applicator, coat the scratched area with glaze-type filler. If required, the filler can be mixed with thinner to provide a very thin paste, which is ideal for filling narrow scratches. Before the glaze filer in the scratch hardens, wrap a piece of smooth cotton cloth around the tip of the finger. Dip the cloth in thinner and then quickly wipe it along the surface of the scratch. This will ensure the surface of the filer is slightly hollow. The scratch can now be painted over as described earlier in this section.
