Book Excerpt: 1990-2014 Mazda MX-5 Miata Repair Manual 1. GENERAL INFORMATION
The information in this Chapter deals with the components from the rear of the engine to the rear wheels, except for the transmission, which is dealt with in Chapters 7A and 7B. For the purposes of this Chapter, these components are grouped into three categories; clutch, driveshaft and driveaxles. Separate Sections within this Chapter offer general descriptions and checking procedures for both groups. Since nearly all the procedures covered in this Chapter involve working under the vehicle, make sure it's securely supported on sturdy jackstands or a hoist where the vehicle can be easily raised and lowered.
2. CLUTCH: DESCRIPTION AND CHECK
  1. All vehicles with a manual transmission use a single dry plate, diaphragm spring type clutch. The clutch disc has a splined hub which allows it to slide along the splines of the transmission input shaft. The clutch and pressure plate are held in contact by spring pressure exerted by the diaphragm in the pressure plate.
  2. The clutch release system is operated by hydraulic pressure. The hydraulic release system consists of the clutch pedal, a master cylinder, a fluid reservoir, the hydraulic line, a slave cylinder which actuates the clutch release lever and the clutch release (or throw-out) bearing.
  3. When pressure is applied to the clutch pedal to release the clutch, hydraulic pressure is exerted against the outer end of the clutch release lever. As the lever pivots, the shaft fingers push against the release bearing. The bearing pushes against the fingers of the diaphragm spring of the pressure plate assembly, which in turn releases the clutch plate.

CUSTOMER REVIEW: The book was very helpful and detailed, but it was missing any instructions on removing the VVTactuator from on top of the valve cover in order to remove the valve cover. There is a very small description of it on page 6-22 where it states that on 2006 and later models use a Variable Valve timing (VVT) system. I have a 2001 Miata which has the VVT system. I very carefully bent the tube to Oil Control Valve to get it out of the way to remove the valve cover. There has to be an easier way to get the Oil Control Valve out of the way. — Richard Rodell | Eau Claire, WI
