Book Excerpt: 2002-2017 Harley-Davidson VRSC Series Repair Manual FRONT SUSPENSION: STEERING STEM BEARINGS

Remove, clean and lubricate the steering stem bearings with special purpose grease (part No. HD-99857-97 or equivalent) at the interval specified in Table 1. Refer to Steering Head and Stem in Chapter Twelve. WHEEL BEARINGS Worn wheel bearings cause excessive wheel play that will result in vibration and other steering troubles. The wheel bearings are sealed and require no routine maintenance. If any service is required on the wheel bearings, refer to Chapter Eleven. STEERING HEAD INSPECTION

1. Support the motorcycle so that the front tire clears the ground.
2. Check the bearing preload as follows:
1. Center the front wheel. Push lightly against the left handlebar grip to start the wheel turning to the right, then let go. The wheel should continue turning under its own momentum until the fork legs hit their stop.
2. Center the wheel and repeat by lightly pushing against the right handlebar grip.
3. If the front wheel does not turn all the way to the stop when you lightly push a handlebar grip, the steering is too tight. Adjust the steering head bearings as described in Installation in Steering Head and Stem in Chapter Twelve.
3. Check the bearing free play as follows:
1. Center the front wheel. Grasp the bottom of the two fork sliders and try to rock the fork legs back and forth. There should be little or no rocking in the steering head.
2. If there is any play, the steering head is too loose. Adjust the steering head bearings as described in Installation in Steering Head and Stem in Chapter Twelve.
