Book Excerpt: Cadillac Repair Manual: DeVille 1994-2005, Seville 1992-2004, DTS 2006-2010 INTRODUCTION
This chapter is designed to help the home mechanic maintain the Cadillac Seville and DeVille with the goals of maximum performance, economy, safety and reliability in mind. Included is a master-maintenance schedule, followed by procedures dealing specifically with each item on the schedule. Visual checks, adjustments, component replacement and other helpful items are included. Refer to the accompanying illustrations of the engine compartment and the underside of the vehicle for the locations of various components. Servicing your vehicle in accordance with the mileage/time maintenance schedule and the step-by-step procedures will result in a planned maintenance program that should produce a long and reliable service life. Keep in mind that it?s a comprehensive plan, so maintaining some items but not others at the specified intervals will not produce the same results. As you service your vehicle, you?ll discover that many of the procedures can ? and should ? be grouped together because of the nature of the particular procedure you?re performing or because of the close proximity of two otherwise unrelated components to one another.

ELECTRICAL TROUBLESHOOTING
Refer to illustration 2.15 A typical electrical circuit consists of an electrical component, any switches, relays, motors, fuses, fusible links or circuit breakers related to that component and the wiring and connectors that link the component to both the battery and the chassis. To help you pinpoint an electrical circuit problem, wiring diagrams are included at the end of this Chapter. Before tackling any troublesome electrical circuit, first study the appropriate wiring diagrams to get a complete understanding of what makes up that individual circuit. Noting if other components related to the circuit are operating properly, for instance, can often narrow trouble spots down. If several components or circuits fail at one time, chances are the problem is a fuse or ground connection, because several circuits are often routed through the same fuse and ground connections. Electrical problems usually stem from simple causes, such as loose or corroded connections, a blown fuse, a melted fusible link or a failed relay. Visually inspect the condition of all fuses, wires and connections in a problem circuit before troubleshooting the circuit. If test equipment and instruments are going to be utilized, use the diagrams to plan ahead of time where you will make the necessary connections in order to accurately pinpoint the trouble spot.
