Book Excerpt: 1973-1979 Audi Fox Repair Manual ENGINE AND CLUTCH
REMOVING AND INSTALLING FLYWHEEL The clutch pressure plate assembly and the clutch driven plate must be removed before you can remove the flywheel. See 9.1 Removing, Checking, and Installing Clutch Plates. TO REMOVE FLYWHEEL:
  1. Mark the flywheel so that you can install it in its exact original position on the crankshaft.
  2. Install a flywheel-holding fixture - a dog that engages the starter ring gear teeth, shown earlier in Fig. 9-1 - on the engine. Alternatively, use coat hanger wire to bind a partially-installed clutch pressure plate mounting bolt to a bolt hole in the engine block's transmission mounting flange.
  3. Remove the six bolts that hold the flywheel to the crankshaft. Then remove the flywheel.

TO INSTALL FLYWHEEL:
  1. If you are installing a replacement flywheel, it may have only a TDC (top dead center) mark (0). If so, measure off 7 mm (9/32 in.) as shown in Fig. 9-8, then cut a 3 degree BTDC (before top dead center) ignition timing mark into the new flywheel.
  2. If the crankshaft oil seal is leaking, replace the seal as described in 11.1 Replacing, Crankshaft and Intermediate Shaft Oil Seals.
  3. Using solvent, clean the pilot bearing that is in the center of the crankshaft. Check to see that the needles are not flattened by wear. If the bearing is undamaged, pack the needles with 1 gram (1/32 oz.) of multipurpose grease (just enough to coat all needles lightly). If the bearing is damaged, remove it as shown in Fig. 9-9. Using an appropriate bushing driver, drive in a new bearing, lettered end outward, until it is seated as indicated in Fig. 9-10. Then lubricate the new bearing as just described.

FUEL AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS
REPAIRING CARBURETORS Carburetor repairs consist of cleaning the carburetor, replacing the soft parts (gaskets, O-rings, and seals), replacing the jets and similar hard components, and making various pre-installation adjustments. If you install a new carburetor or a factory rebuilt carburetor, you should still check the various adjustments before you install the new carburetor on the car.
REMOVING, REBUILDING, AND INSTALLING SOLEX CARBURETOR If a carburetor must be replaced, it is important that the new carburetor have the same part number as the original, or that the new carburetor be the correct replacement for the car model being serviced. Always obtain replacement carburetors and carburetor parts with reference to the carburetor part number and the engine number. TO REMOVE SOLEX CARBURETOR:
  1. Release the clips that hold the cover to the body of the air cleaner. Remove the cover. Disconnect the EEC hose from the air cleaner body.
  2. Remove the nut indicated in Fig. 6-1. Then, being careful not to damage the intake air preheating duct as you disengage it from its connection on the exhaust manifold, lift up the air cleaner and disconnect the PCV hose. Remove the air cleaner from the car.
