During impact, the ball bearings roll along the jacket wall allowing the smaller, lower end of the jacket to collapse within the larger upper end. The steering shaft is constructed in two parts fitting together so that they can telescope. The shift tube is constructed in two telescoping parts. An injected plastic joint holds the telescoping parts of both the steering shaft and the shift tube so that they remain in the proper relationship under normal operations.
