Book Excerpt: 1983-1991 Toyota Camry Repair Manual FOUR-CYLINDER ENGINES
OIL PAN | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
(Refer to illustrations 14.7a, 14.7b, 14.8, 14.9 and 14.14)
  1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
  2. Set the parking brake and block the rear wheels.
  3. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands.
  4. Remove the splash shields under the engine, if equipped.
  5. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter (see Chapter 1). Remove the oil dipstick.
  6. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe from the engine and remove the clamp behind the engine to allow the pipe to hang down.
  7. Unbolt the crossmember which connects the lower suspension mounts, and then remove the crossmember under the oil pan (see illustrations).
  8. Remove the block-to-transaxle brace (see illustration).
  9. Remove the bolts and detach the oil pan. If it's stuck, pry it loose very carefully with a small screwdriver or putty knife (see illustration). Don't damage the mating surfaces of the pan and block or oil leaks could develop.
  10. Use a scraper to remove all traces of old gasket material and sealant from the block and oil pan. Clean the mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone.
  11. Make sure the threaded bolt holes in the block are clean.
  12. Check the oil pan flange for distortion, particularly around the bolt holes.

V6 ENGINE
INTAKE MANIFOLD | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
  2. Drain the coolant into a clean container (see Chapter 1).
  3. Position the number one piston at Top Dead Center (see Section 3), remove the upper (no.2) timing belt cover and loosen the no.1 timing belt idler puller (see Section 7).
  4. Remove the throttle body, fuel injectors and air intake chamber (see Chapter 4).
  5. Remove the upper (no.2) idler pulley bracket stay (see illustration 4.5).
  6. Clearly label, and then detach all remaining wires, hoses and brackets still attached to the intake manifold and coolant outlets (see illustration 4.5).
  7. Remove the water outlet (thermostat housing) and water bypass outlet (see illustration 4.5).
  8. Remove the eight mounting nuts/bolts, then detach the manifold from the engine. If it's stuck, don't pry between the gasket mating surfaces or damage may result.
