OIL PAN | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
(Refer to illustrations 14.7a, 14.7b, 14.8, 14.9 and 14.14)
- Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
- Set the parking brake and block the rear wheels.
- Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands.
- Remove the splash shields under the engine, if equipped.
- Drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter (see Chapter 1). Remove the oil dipstick.
- Disconnect the front exhaust pipe from the engine and remove the clamp behind the engine to allow the pipe to hang down.
- Unbolt the crossmember which connects the lower suspension mounts, and then remove the crossmember under the oil pan (see illustrations).
- Remove the block-to-transaxle brace (see illustration).
- Remove the bolts and detach the oil pan. If it's stuck, pry it loose very carefully with a small screwdriver or putty knife (see illustration). Don't damage the mating surfaces of the pan and block or oil leaks could develop.
- Use a scraper to remove all traces of old gasket material and sealant from the block and oil pan. Clean the mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone.
- Make sure the threaded bolt holes in the block are clean.
- Check the oil pan flange for distortion, particularly around the bolt holes.
V6 ENGINE
INTAKE MANIFOLD | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
- Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
- Drain the coolant into a clean container (see Chapter 1).
- Position the number one piston at Top Dead Center (see Section 3), remove the upper (no.2) timing belt cover and loosen the no.1 timing belt idler puller (see Section 7).
- Remove the throttle body, fuel injectors and air intake chamber (see Chapter 4).
- Remove the upper (no.2) idler pulley bracket stay (see illustration 4.5).
- Clearly label, and then detach all remaining wires, hoses and brackets still attached to the intake manifold and coolant outlets (see illustration 4.5).
- Remove the water outlet (thermostat housing) and water bypass outlet (see illustration 4.5).
- Remove the eight mounting nuts/bolts, then detach the manifold from the engine. If it's stuck, don't pry between the gasket mating surfaces or damage may result.
