Book Excerpt: 1954-1961 BSA Gold Star B31, B32, DB, M33, B33, etc Repair Manual ENGINE
OPERATIONS WITH ENGINE IN FRAME
  1. It is not necessary to remove the engine from the frame unless the crankshaft assembly requires attention. Most operations can be accomplished with the engine in the frame such as:
  • Removal and replacement of the cylinder head.
  • Removal and replacement of the cylinder barrel and piston.
  • Removal and replacement of the clutch and primary clutch.
  • Removal of the timing pinions.
  • Removal of the oil pump.
  • Removal of the dynamo and/or magneto.
  1. When several operations have to be undertaken simultaneously, such as during an extensive rebuild or overhaul, it is often advantageous to remove the engine from the frame after some preliminary dismantling. This will give the advantage of better access and more working space, especially if the engine is attached to a bench-mounted stand.

FUEL SYSTEM, CARBURETION AND LUBRICATION
GAS TANK: REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT
  1. Turn the gas tap(s) to the OFF position. Disconnect the gas pipe(s) by unscrewing the unions at the base of the tap(s).
  2. On M series machines, remove the two bolts which pass through the lugs projecting from the front of the gas tank, either side of the steering head lug. Unscrew the two bolts that pass into the base of the tank, towards the rear. Before the gas tank can be lifted away from the machine, the single bolt retaining the front of the dual seat must be removed to enable the seat to be lifted slightly. On all other models remove the rubber plug from the center of the tank top and use a box spanner to slacken and remove the retaining bolt. Remove also the metal strip that bridges the two halves of the tank at the front. The bridge piece is held by two nuts on studs.
  3. Replacement is accomplished by reversing the procedure adopted for the removal of the tank. Do not omit to replace the bridging strip fitted to the underside of the tank of the swinging arm models. This strip prevents the two halves of the tank from flexing and opening the welded seams.
  4. After replacing the tank, check that the air hole in the filler cap is unobstructed. If the tank is airtight, the supply of gas will be cut off, leading to a mysterious engine fade out that is difficult to eliminate without realizing the cause.
