Book Excerpt: 1997-2000 Suzuki GSXR600 Repair Manual LUBRICATION, MAINTENANCE AND TUNE-UP
SPARK PLUG READING Reading the spark plugs can provide a significant amount of information regarding engine performance. Reading plugs that have been in use will give an indication of spark plug operation, air/fuel mixture composition and engine condition (oil consumption, pistons, etc.). Before checking the spark plugs, operate the motorcycle under a medium load for approximately 6 miles (10 km). Avoid prolonged idling before shutting off the engine. Remove the spark plugs as described in this chapter. Examine each plug and compare it to those in Figure 94. If the plugs are being read to determine if carburetor jetting is correct, start with new plugs and operate the bike at the load that corresponds to the jetting information desired. For example, if the main jet is in question, operate the bike at full throttle and shut the engine off and coast to a stop.
SPARK PLUG HEAT RANGE Spark plugs are available in various heat ranges, hotter or colder than the plugs originally installed by the manufacturer. Select a plug with a heat range designed for the loads and conditions under which the bike will be operated. A plug with an incorrect heat range can foul, overheat and cause piston damage.

ENGINE TOP END
ENGINE PRINCIPLES Figure 1 explains basic four-stroke engine operation. This is helpful when troubleshooting or repairing the engine.
EXHAUST SYSTEM Check the exhaust system for deep dents and fractures. Repair or replace damaged parts immediately. Check the muffler frame mounting flanges for fractures and loose bolts. Check the cylinder head mounting flanges for tightness. Loose exhaust pipe connections will cause excessive exhaust noise and rob the engine of power.
MUFFLER: REMOVAL/INSTALLATION Refer to Figure 2 for this procedure.
  1. Securely support the bike on level ground.
  2. Remove the nuts and washers (A, Figure 3) securing the muffler to the exhaust pipe assembly.
  3. Remove the muffler mounting bolt, washers and nut (B, Figure 3) securing the muffler clamp to the rear footpeg bracket.
  4. Pull the muffler out from the exhaust pipe and remove the muffler (C, Figure 3). Remove the gasket from the exhaust pipe.
