ENGINE The five-cylinder engine is of the double overhead camshaft type, incorporating two or four valves per cylinder according to type. The cylinders are in line and the engine is mounted transversely on a subframe in the engine bay. The engine codes (which appear only where necessary) are quite logical to follow - the first digit is the number of cylinders, the second and third together give the engine capacity in litres, and the final digit is the number of valves per cylinder. A "T" designation after the digits denotes a turbocharged engine. Thus, the B5234 T is a five-cylinder, 2.3 litre engine, with 4 valves per cylinder (total: 20 valves) and is turbocharged.
ENGINE, TRANSMISSION REMOVAL Included in Chapter 2 are details of removing the engine and transmission from the car, and general overhaul procedures for the cylinder head, cylinder block and all other engine internal components. The information ranges from advice concerning preparation for an overhaul and the purchase of replacement parts, to detailed step-by-step procedures covering removal, inspection, renovation and refitting of engine internal components. After Section 6, all instructions are based on the assumption that the engine has been removed from the car.
