Book Excerpt: 1993-1997 Volvo 850 Repair Manual GENERAL ENGINE OVERHAUL PROCEDURES
OIL PAN | INSTALLATION
  1. Place a new O-ring on the oil pick-up pipe and insert the pipe into its location. Secure with the bracket mounting bolt tightened to the torque listed in this Chapter's Specifications.
  2. Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the oil pan and the intermediate section.
  3. Install new O-rings in the recesses in the intermediate section.
  4. Using the short haired application roller, apply an even coating of Volvo liquid gasket solution to the oil pan mating face. Ensure that the whole surface is covered, but note that a thin coating is sufficient for a good seal.
  5. Correctly position the oil pan onto the intermediate section, then install four bolts at the rear of the intermediate section. Tighten the bolts finger tight only.
  6. Using a straight edge, ensure that the rear edges of the oil pump and the intermediate section. If necessary align properly so the oil pan is flush, then tighten the four bolts to just hold the oil pump in position.
  7. Install the remaining bolts and tighten all progressively, working towards the center, to the torque listed in this Chapter's Specifications.

SUSPENSION AND STEERING SYSTEMS
STEERING PUMP | REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
(Refer to illustration 22.5)
  1. Remove the auxiliary drivebelt (see Chapter 1).
  2. Drain approximately one U.S. quart of coolant from the radiator (see Chapter 1).
  3. Disconnect the radiator top hose from the thermostat housing.
  4. Remove the cold air inlet duct from the control module box and disconnect the fluid hose from the clip on the engine oil dipstick tube.
  5. Remove the guard plate upper mounting bolt and remove the spacer sleeve, then loosen the guard plate lower mounting nut (see illustration).
  6. Loosen the fluid pressure pipe union nut one quarter of a turn.
  7. Remove the steering pump five mounting bolts; three are accessible through the holes in the pump pulley and two are at the rear of the pump.
