This do-it-yourself repair and service manual by Haynes, covers 1991-1995 Toyota Previa, rear-wheel drive models.

Note: This manual does not include all-wheel drive or supercharged engine info.

One of the biggest minivans in Toyota's lineup, the Toyota Previa was a 1990s-era precursor to the Toyota Sienna. If you have a Previa and would like to tackle the maintenance and repairs on your own, check out the Haynes Toyota Previa Repair manual 1991-1995 available at The Motor Bookstore and get insights into how to remove and install the starter motor, checking the operation of the power brake booster, doing an air tightness check, the emission controls systems so critical for passing inspection, the fuel and exhaust system, the brakes, driveline and, of course, the engine. It is all covered in this 288-page manual replete with diagrams and photos to point you in the right direction for DIY repairs. The manual comes with free shipping to the 48 contiguous United States when you order from The Motor Bookstore.

(Refer to illustration 19.3)
  1. Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Caution: If the stereo in your vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft system, make sure you have the correct activation code before disconnecting the battery.
  2. Detach the electrical connectors from the starter/solenoid assembly.
  3. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts (see illustration). Note: If equipped with a manual transmission, it may be necessary to remove the clutch release cylinder. Remove the mounting bolts (see Chapter 8) and move the cylinder aside, but DO NOT disconnect the hydraulic line.
  4. Remove the bracket from the upper section of the starter/solenoid assembly.

Note: It is necessary to loosen one or two of the bracket bolts to allow the starter/solenoid assembly to partially drop down to gain access to the remaining bracket assembly bolts and hardware.

  5. Installation is the reverse of removal.

  1. Depress the brake pedal several times with the engine off and make sure there's no change in the pedal reserve distance.
  2. Depress the pedal and start the engine. If the pedal goes down slightly, operation is normal.

  4. Start the engine and turn it off after one or two minutes. Depress the brake pedal slowly several times. If the pedal depresses less each time, the booster is airtight.
  5. Depress the brake pedal while the engine is running, then stop the engine with the pedal depressed. If there's no change in the pedal reserve travel after holding the pedal for 30 seconds, the booster is airtight.
  6. REMOVAL (Refer to illustration 11.7)

  7. Power brake booster units shouldn't be disassembled. They require special tools not normally found in most automotive repair stations or shops. They're fairly complex and, because of their critical relationship to brake performance, should be replace with a new or rebuilt one.
  8. To remove the booster, first remove the brake master cylinder (see Section 8).
