Book Excerpt: The Chevrolet Small-Block Bible AROUND THE BLOCK
LESSON: POLITICS, RELIGION, AND SMALL-BLOCKS There is no dispute that hundreds, even thousands, of articles, books, and Internet references have appeared regarding the small-block Chevy. In the case of our book, we are taking an admonishment from the old axiom, "Never argue about politics or religion," when it comes to deciding which of the many versions of the small-block is best. It is easy to create a quagmire of mixed opinions, preferences, misconceptions, and pure mythology. The truth of the matter is, choosing a small-block application can depend on budget, usage, and, in the case of a period restoration project, correctness. Because this is a practical workbook for the enthusiast, it was decided not to take sides in any of the arguments, but rather present all of the Chevy small-block configurations and display their dominant features and let the reader make an educated decision. As is the case with all things mechanical, some concepts work well and other not so much. To keep things well-rounded, we gathered information from a variety of sources, including websites, old Chevrolet records and press releases, and of course, opinions expressed by several of our working experts, including Robert Jung of Edelbrock, Ed Pink of Ed Pink Racing Engines, and Kevin McClelland, senior project manager for K&N Filters, who spent many years as a consultant on research and development programs for companies contracted to develop high-performance Chevy small-block engines. McClelland has also worked for the NHRA, dealing with sportsman class racing machines. We hope some practical and useful information on the various small-block configurations will be interfused as part of the learning experience. So, in our continuing effort to separate the contents of this book from other technical manuals, our experts will take on the job of teacher throughout the chapter. Within this portion of the chapter, the author acknowledges that his interpretation of the small-block lineage comes from outside information and not his own expertise. And, yes, facts will be repeated by our experts; however, redundancy in this regard is a good thing.
