THERMOSTAT | REMOVAL, TESTING AND REFITTING
  1. Drain the cooling system as described in Chapter 1.
  2. On turbo models remove the cover, then disconnect and remove the intercooler bypass hose and the inlet hose from the throttle body.
  3. Unscrew the bolt and disconnect the rigid coolant pipe from the water pump, and then unscrew the bolt which secures the pipe to the front left-hand corner of the engine. Remove the O-ring from the water pump.
  4. Loosen the clip and disconnect the preheating coolant hose from the throttle body or from the rigid pipe, and then unbolt the pipe from the thermostat cover (see illustrations).
  5. Unscrew the bolts and remove the thermostat cover (see illustration). There is no need to disconnect the top hose from the cover.
  6. Remove the thermostat from the cylinder head or thermostat cover (see illustration).
  7. TESTING
  8. A rough test of the thermostat may be made by suspending it with a piece of string in a container full of water. Heat the water to bring it to the boil - the thermostat must open by the time the water boils. If not, renew it.
  9. If a thermometer is available, the precise opening temperature of the thermostat may be determined and compared with the figures given in the Specifications. The opening temperature is normally marked on the thermostat.
  10. A thermostat which fails to close as the water cools must also be renewed.
  11. If necessary renew the rubber ring on the outer periphery of the thermostat.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
SELECTOR LEVER ASSEMBLY | REMOVAL AND REFITTING NOTE: Renewal of the sport and winter mode switches is covered in Section 8. REMOVAL
  1. Remove the center console, and rear compartment air ducts, as described in Chapter 11, and then position the selector lever in the 'N' (neutral) position.
  2. Release the indicator plate from the lever housing then disconnect the selector cable from the base of the selector lever and the front of the lever housing, as described in Section 4.
  3. Slacken and remove the mounting bolts and then maneuver the lever assembly away from the floorpan (see illustration).
  4. Unplug the mode switch wiring connectors from the side of the housing. Where applicable, free the bulbholder from the indicator panel.
  5. Disconnect the ignition switch/lock cable from the rear of the housing, and then remove the housing and lever assembly from the vehicle. Ensure that the selector cable adjuster nut does not fall out.
  6. Inspect the selector lever mechanism for signs of wear or damage.
  7. REFITTING
  8. Check the adjustment of the parking lock mechanism as described in the following sub-Section, before refitting the selector lever housing.
  9. Refitting is a reversal of removal; on completion, adjust the selector cable, as described in Section 3, and then refit the center console and air ducts as described in Chapter 11.
