SUSPENSION CHECK
  1. The suspension components must be maintained in top operating condition to ensure rider safety. Loose, worn or damaged suspension parts decrease the scooter's stability and control. FRONT SUSPENSION
  2. While standing alongside the scooter, apply the front brake and push on the handlebars to compress the suspension several times. See if it moves up-and-down smoothly without binding. If binding is felt, the suspension should be disassembled and inspected (see Chapter 6).
  3. On models with a monoshock, inspect the shock for fluid leaks and tightness of it's mountings. If leaks are found, the shock should be renewed (see Chapter6).
  4. On models with telescopic forks, inspect the area around the dust seal for signs of grease or oil leaks, then carefully lever off the dust seal using a flat-bladed screwdriver and inspect the area behind it (see illustrations). If corrosion due to ingress of water is evident, the seals must be renewed (see Chapter 6). The chromed finish on the forks is prone to corrosion and pitting, so it is advisable to keep them as clean as possible and to spray them regularly with a rust inhibitor, otherwise the seals will not last long (see illustration). If corrosion and pitting is evident, tackle it early as possible to prevent it getting worse.
  5. Check the tightness of all suspension nuts and bolts to ensure none have worked loose.

FUEL AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS
FOUR-STROKE ENGINES: REMOVAL
(Steps #10 thru #12)
  • Two types of throttle twist grips are used. Some models have a motorcycle-type twist grip, where the nipple on the end of the inner cable fits into a socket in the twist grip. Other models have a sliding type twist grip, where the end of the inner cable is secured in a slider, which locates into a diagonal track inside the twist grip.
  • To access the cable at the throttle twist grip, remove the handlebar front cover. To access the cable at the carburetor, remove the storage compartment (see Chapter 7).
  • On most models with a motorcycle type twist grip, slacken the cable adjuster locknut and thread the adjuster fully into the housing (see illustration 10.3a). Pull back the twist grip rubber, then remove the screws securing the cover plate and remove the plate, noting how it fits (see illustration 10.3b). Detach the cable nipple from its socket, then remove the cable elbow, noting how it fits (see illustrations 10.3c and 10.3d). Now unscrew the cable adjuster from its housing and remove the cable via the slot in the housing (see illustration 10.3e). Note that on B125 models the twist grip housing is in two halves. Slacken the throttle cable adjuster, then undo the screw securing the halves of the housing together and separate them (see illustration). Detach the cable nipple from the twist grip and pull the cable out (see illustration). Note how the pin in the front half of the housing locates in the handlebar (see illustration).
