Book Excerpt: 2001-2012 Hyundai Santa Fe Repair Manual FOUR-CYLINDER ENGINE
TIMING BELTS AND SPROCKETS | REMOVAL, INSPECTION AND INSTALLATION WARNING! Wait until the engine is completely cool before beginning this procedure. REMOVAL (Refer to illustration 5.9)
  1. Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery (see Chapter 5, Section 1). Position the number one piston at TDC on the compression stroke (see Section 3). The marks on the camshafts and the valve cover should be aligned. The dowels on the camshaft sprockets should be facing upward.
  2. Remove the drive belts (see Chapter 1) and the alternator (see Chapter 5).
  3. Remove the valve cover (see Section 4).
  4. Refer to Section 10 and remove the crankshaft damper and pulley. Also remove the water pump pulley.
  5. Remove the timing belt cover.
  6. NOTE: If you intend to reuse the timing belt, use white paint or chalk to make a mark indicating the front of the belt. If a used timing belt is reinstalled with the wear pattern in the opposite direction, noise and increased wear may occur.
  7. Confirm that the engine is still at TDC on the compression stroke for cylinder number one.
  8. CAUTION: If the crankshaft is rotated while the timing belt is removed, the pistons may contact the valves and bend them.
  9. Remove the timing belt tensioner and then the timing belt. Mark the pulley flange so it can be installed with the same side facing outward.
  10. The camshaft sprockets can be removed at this time if necessary. To remove the camshaft sprockets, loosen the bolts while holding the lug on the camshaft with a wrench, on the hex portion of the camshaft only. Note the identification marks on the camshaft sprockets before removal, and then remove the bolts. Pull the sprockets by hand until they slip off the dowels.
  11. Remove the plug on the left side of the block and insert a screwdriver into the hole (see illustration). This will lock the left balance shaft.
  12. Remove the oil pump sprocket nut and lift off the sprocket.
  13. Remove the plug from the right side of the block, and then loosen the right balance shaft sprocket bolt using the same technique as in Step 9.
  14. Remove the tensioner and the inner timing belt. Mark the pulley flange so it can be installed with the same side facing outward.

CLUTCH AND DRIVELINE
PILOT BUSHING | INSPECTION AND REPLACEMENT
(Refer to illustration 7.5 and 7.6)
  1. The clutch pilot bushing is pressed into the rear of the crankshaft. It is greased at the factory and does not require additional lubrication. Its primary purpose is to support the front of the transaxle input shaft. The pilot bushing should be inspected whenever the clutch components are removed from the engine. Due to its inaccessibility, if you are in doubt as to its condition, replace it with a new one.
  2. NOTE: If the engine has been removed from the vehicle, disregard the following steps which do not apply.
  3. Remove the transaxle (see Chapter 7 Part A).
  4. Remove the clutch components (see Section 5).
  5. Inspect for any excessive wear, scoring, lack of grease, dryness or obvious damage. If any of these conditions are noted, the bearing should be replaced. A flashlight will be helpful to direct light into the recess.
  6. Removal can be accomplished with a slide hammer fitted with a puller attachment (see illustration), which are available at most auto parts stores or equipment rental yards.
  7. To install the new bearing, lightly lubricate the outside surface with multi-purpose grease, and then drive it into the recess with a hammer and bearing/bushing drive (see illustration). Make sure the bearing seal faces toward the transmission. If you don't have a bearing driver, carefully tap it into place with a hammer and a socket.
