Book Excerpt: How To Restore Your Classic 1955-1956 Chevy INTRODUCTION
The two cars restored in this book were the finest bodies that could be found for a total high point restoration. Along with these two cars a 36,000 mile 1955 four-door Sedan and a 34,000 miles two-door Sedan were parted out. From these two untouched original cars came the original parts, nuts and bolts to authenticate this book. The 1955 Hardtop came out of Montana and had not been driven since 1962. It still had the original continental kit installed. The car was totally free from rust. Restoration started in November of 1993 and was completed in May of 1994. Dave Malz and Ken Lambrecht accomplished all the of the body and paint work. I disassembled and reassembled the complete car, taking pictures and writing as I went. The car was completed in time for the Classic Chevy Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. At that show, it scored 994 points and the highest point car of the show. The 1955 two-door Sedan now owned by Bill Curran, was founded by Palmer Welcome and myself outside of Phoenix, Arizona in 1982 and brought back to Minnesota. It was a rust-free body and frame needing a complete parts car. This car was matted up with an all original 1955 two-door Bel Air Sedan that only had 34,000 miles on it, but spend its whole life in Minnesota. This was a perfect match. The disassembly of the dash and the Sedan interior will show you how nice the inside of this car was. Restoration started on this car in the fall of 1993. Both of these bodies were done side by side, which saves a lot of work. Body and paint of this car was also done on the engine and transmission in Chicago, Illinois. This worked out all right because this made this car ready for the 1995 Classic Chevy Convention in Omaha, Nebraska. At that convention, this scored 996 points, earning it a first place and a Platinum certificate. As you turn to the pages in this book, you will find a complete world of restoration opening up before your eyes. Pictures will tell you the story from start to finish. This book contains over 1800 pictures. Pictures that show you every step. It has been said that a picture can say a thousand words, well that is right especially when doing restoration. As you turn to the pages in this book, you will find we wanted to write each step simple enough for someone who has never restored a Chevy before. It has detailed steps from the beginning to end. I tried to tell you what to take apart or put together, what bolts or fasteners are involved and what wrenches to use. Each section is easy to read and to follow with its adjoining picture right below or nearby. This will help you read and follow each step. Each section in each chapter is by itself with its own step numbers and picture numbers.
